GPM₃ participated in the 27th International Conference on Science and Technology of Synthetic Electronic Materials (ICSM 2026), held from July 19 to 24 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (event website).
Prof. Eduard Westphal served on the organizing committee of the event, which brought together researchers, students, and experts from around the world to discuss the latest advances in the science and technology of synthetic electronic materials.
During the conference, Carolina Francener, a PhD student at Durham University, current collaborator of GPM₃ and former master’s co-supervisee of Prof. Eduard Westphal, presented work developed in collaboration with the group. Her presentation received an award in the oral presentation category, highlighting the quality and relevance of the results presented.
GPM₃ congratulates Carolina on this important achievement, which reflects the quality of the research developed by the group, as well as the importance and impact of its international collaborations.
During the 49th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ), held in 2026, Prof. Hugo Gallardo delivered the opening lecture, entitled “Contributions of Chemistry to the Science of Liquid Crystals: From Molecular Design to Applications.” The lecture highlighted the role of Chemistry in the development of liquid crystal science, from molecular design to its diverse applications.
Following the lecture, Prof. Gallardo was honored with the Simão Mathias Medal, one of the most prestigious distinctions awarded by the SBQ. The medal recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development of Chemistry in Brazil and have played a significant role in strengthening the national chemical community.
This recognition celebrates a career marked by scientific excellence, dedication to research and the education of new generations of scientists, as well as a fundamental contribution to the development of liquid crystal science in Brazil.
For everyone at GPM₃ – Research Group on Molecular and Mesomorphic Materials, it is a great source of pride to share this special moment. Prof. Hugo’s work, dedication, and scientific career continue to be an inspiration to our researchers and students.

On May 28 and 29, the DAAD Brazil brought together approximately 250 alumni, researchers, authorities, and partners at the German Embassy in Brasília for the “Brazil–Germany Competence Networks” event. The meeting aimed to strengthen the Alumni network as a strategic bridge for scientific and academic cooperation between Brazil and Germany.
The GPM₃ – Research Group on Molecular and Mesomorphic Materials was represented at the event by Prof. Dr. Eduard Westphal, reinforcing the group’s commitment to the internationalization of research and to strengthening scientific collaborations between the two countries.
Participation in the meeting also provided an important opportunity to expand connections, establish new partnerships, and strengthen cooperation networks that contribute to the advancement of science and researcher training.
GPM3 congratulates Dr. Monike da Silva Kutz on the successful defense of her PhD thesis, entitled “Twisted π-systems for delayed fluorescence, room-temperature phosphorescence, liquid crystals and glasses.”
The thesis was developed under a cotutelle (joint doctoral degree) program, under the supervision of Prof. Eduard Westphal (UFSC, Brazil) and Dr. Harald Bock (CRPP, France), reflecting the strong scientific collaboration between the institutions and the international nature of her academic training.
We are very proud of this important achievement and of all the dedication, expertise, and scientific contributions demonstrated throughout her doctoral journey.
We wish Dr. Monike every success in her academic and professional career, and hope that this achievement marks only the beginning of a journey filled with many new accomplishments!
